Experiments @ Science Centre – TU Delft

https://vimeo.com/829418821 <set-up> For the experiment I wrote a program that combines light, movement and sound. For the hardware I used the Neopixel ring, the HC-SR04 sensor (ultrasonic sensor measures the distance to an object by emitting ultrasonic sound waves and converting the reflected sound into an electrical signal) and the […]

The Psychology of Computer Rage

In April 2015, a Colorado man was cited for firing a gun within a residential area when he took his computer into a back alley and shot it eight times with a 9mm pistol. When questioned, he told police that he had become so frustrated with his computer that he had “reached critical mass,” and stated that after he had shot his computer, “the angels sung on high.” In 2007, a German man threw his computer out the window in the middle of the night, startling his neighbors. German police were sympathetic and did not press charges, stating, “Who hasn’t felt like doing that?”

When did we decide machines will come for us?

As an avid science fiction enthusiast, I recently read Death’s End (Chinese: 死神永生) a science fiction novel by the Chinese writer Liu Cixin where the solar system is attacked by a superior species using a spacetime anomaly that causes the third dimension to flatten into the second dimension. Humanity has no defense against this and will be rendered extinct within days. The fear of superior technology and machines turning against humanity has been a recurring theme in human storytelling, dating back to ancient times. Tales of robots, mechanical humans, and statues coming to life have captured our imaginations for centuries.

Writers like Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, and Philip K. Dick explored themes of artificial intelligence, robotics, and sentient machines, delving into the potential implications of their existence. These tales tapped into a deep-seated human fear—the fear of the unknown, lack of predictability, and lack of control over our circumstances. So how did the emergence of science fiction as a genre further influence our collective perceptions of machines?

#IMPULSES [X]

During my work period (January 2023 – September 2023) of the Research & Developments of CBK Rotterdam I intended to publish my progress and thoughts monthly on this subdomain. I have decided the monthly update is not the right format. I will continue to post, but not on a monthly basis. Some months more, some less.

Under this post you will find an overview of categories. Select ‘Research & Development, CBK Rotterdam’ for an overview of all publications written during my work period.

ChatGPT, on the machine destroyed.

One reason why people might get upset when a machine doesn’t function as it should is that we rely on technology to perform tasks that are important to us, and when a machine fails to do so, it can be frustrating or even disruptive to our lives. We may also feel that we’ve invested time, money, or effort into the machine, and its failure can feel like a personal failure or disappointment.

hello: ChatGPT

As an AI language model, I cannot predict human behavior with certainty, but I can provide some insight based on human psychology and previous studies.

It is possible that some members of the public may attempt to completely destroy the machine if left unsupervised. The phenomenon you observed, where people initially react hesitantly and reluctantly but eventually become eager to see destruction, can be attributed to the psychological concept of “deindividuation.” When individuals feel anonymous and unidentifiable in a group setting, they may feel less accountable for their actions and become more likely to engage in behaviors they wouldn’t normally consider. This can lead to a desire to see destruction and chaos for the sake of excitement and entertainment.

introduction: ‘Impulses’

In what ways can I cultivate the presence of the visitors. How can I use it as an input to the actions performed by the glass machine. And what happens when the spectator becomes part and activator of the deconstructive machine performance.

#prototype Lotus

‘LOTUS’ is a small kinetic object that reacts to movement through the use of a proximety sensor. The movement is caused by a single servo motor, which moves the Lotus’ arms up and down. This prototype is develop during my residence at the ThinkerMakerspace at CYENS in Nicosia, Cyprus.

On the anticipation of the audience. A short account of how Evanescent performed when I got the chance to test its limits at ARS Electronica.

I was invited by V2_Lab for the Unstable media to present and create a work for the Rotterdam Garden at ARS Electronica 2022. The work I created is called Evanescent.

This is what happend.

SET-UP
We find ourselves on the second floor of the Science Building 4 on the grounds of the Johannes Kepler Universität Linz. When you enter the second floor you’ll see a vague shimmering glimpse in the distance. On closer inspection you will see Evanescent, suspended from the ceiling with steel cables, resting its back against the wall. You will probably first notice the six distorted glass gears that contain different shades of red ecoline. When the gears rotate the red dilutes in shades of orange […]

Symbiote: 3D_ bolts and fittings

A significant part of my work is figuring out how to assemble my installations and create space for maintenance. I create my work in such a manner that I can disassemble components and then slip them back together. Often I use 3D-printed components to secure them. I designed numerous components like […]

YJF-ISC-6 evaporator fan motor case

I received a bunch of these YJF-ISC-6 evaporator fan motors from a friend. Normally the purpose of these fan motors is to help circulate the cold air over the evaporator coils in your fridge. But they work fine for prototyping too. I created a little 3D case for them. Download […]

https://vimeo.com/646526762 This month marks the last entry to progress.jannetjejeanine.nl. On this subdomain I have documented my steps in glass for a year. In retrospect, this was a wise choice. Because it is all too easy to lose track of what you already achieved when faced with so many new things to […]

During my residency at the Student Hotel, I experimented with glass gears. Deforming and pulling the gears out of proportion, and creating organic cylinder-shaped gears. These gears were showcased in a 24/7 window exhibit alongside my experiments with trapping and mixing different liquids and my blindly ambitious project to make a glass piston engine.

I recently started using the GIM software. This software was developed by COMPMECH Research Group with the aim of approaching the difficulties commonly encountered in facing kinematic analysis of mechanisms. With the help of GIM, I can make prototypes faster, a growing collection of prototypes can be found by clicking the #prototype.

Sometimes the most beautiful things are born in the midst of sleepless nights and worries.

progress.hotglue.me

I created a hotglue page. Hotglue is an content manipulation system which essentially allows you to create an ever-expanding online moodboard. Which is perfect for me. I can gather all seemingly unrelated ideas, fascinations and information and see where they lead me.

When will wonders cease, we may justly enquire,
When we see a Glass Engine, complete and entire…
Incredulity starts, in most utter surprise,
We can hardly believe the plain sight of our eyes…
The steam from the boilers sends life to the heart,
And life it goes bounding throughout every part.

Exploring traditional separate domains such as programming and glass blowing allows me to take the best of different worlds to create unexpected shapes. A promising sparkle. The combination of craft and technology creates crossovers, hybrid shapes, and new possibilities. My research places “motion sensor”, “laser cutting” and “3D printing” comfortably next to “burner” and “annealing furnace”.

[…] I have increasingly come to see the interaction between me and the work as a performance, in which the machine is the performer and I the assistant. As a person, I am not the lead act because the performative actions do not necessarily have to be performed by me. During the International Film Festival, I wrote instructions so that someone else could switch on and correct Testinstallation Cognizant. The instructions felt like a poem that became part of my work.

First contact – Jeanine Verloop (exchange residence between Hangar and V2_Lab)

A shiny, transparent exoskeleton waits quietly, resting on a table, perhaps a remote activation. Fragile fingers of quick touch remain immovable in a retracted and uncertain position. A voice resounds from an intercom loudspeaker:

– Imagine that you have never seen a human being before.

The alien perspective infiltrates among those present, gently laying on us its bluish prisms.

– Their devices look all the same. Shouldn’t there be more imagination surrounding them?

A laser cuts a writing device. Laser eyes outline grey hands that approach a body (of human appearance) and reconstruct it. Hands hesitating, trying to follow confusing designs: files decrypted by archaeologists of the future, collected on hard disks of transparent methacrylate.

The writing ball

“The writing ball is a thing like me:
made of iron
Yet easily twisted on journeys.
Patience and tact are required in abundance,
As wel as fine fingers, to use us.”

Abstract – Imagine

Imagine humanity through the eyes of aliens. Wouldn’t we look magical from space? From afar, humans seems to generate light. On closer inspection you would see that they actually have frail bodies, and they dominate their habitat through the use of tools.

Over time perhaps you could see the shift. The dawn of an industrialised civilisation. For a time humankind flourished in their mass-produced utopia. Great tools were built, of a scale easily visible from space.

The plotter knife replaced by pens and markers draws intricate designs and patterns with machine precision.

The loud mechanic sounds generated by the plotter were picked up by a microphone and fed into a complex audiovisual feedback loop where sound was converted into image using hacked VGA cables and a signal stabilizer.
